Report of the Social Movements Meeting for the election of the DP / RJ External Ombudsman

Meeting of Social Movements for the election of the External Ombudsman of DP / RJ

1th Oct 2015

Location: ISER

In a meeting attended by social housing movements, quilombolas, street vendors, among others, as well as civil society organizations such as Global Justice, CEJIL and DDH, doubts were clarified regarding the public notice for the election of the Ombudsman's Office of the Public Defender. . About 20 people were present, representing 14 organizations.

Following this, a mobilization effort was articulated for 8 September (the second meeting), which is intended to include the participation of former and current ombudsman ombudsmen from other states: Luciana Zaffalon (Former SP ), Denise Dora (RS) and Ana Virginia (former EC). Rodrigo de Medeiros, a popular lawyer and member of the Justice Forum, who accompanied the process of electing the Ombudsman's Office in Ceará and Rio Grande do Sul, will also participate.

It was also raised the possibility of inviting a representation of the Public Defender's administration in order to present the commitment to the structure and strengthening of the Ombudsman's Office, and especially to strengthen the mobilization and dialogue of Civil Society towards the institution in this process.

The Justice Forum defended the need to build a common platform of social movements that could serve as a basis for possible applications. Another point suggested was the establishment of an Advisory Council composed of representatives of movements and civil society entities to advise and support the Ombudsman, as in São Paulo and Bahia.
